10-day Dasara extravaganza begins

Mysuru city has been decked up for the event and this has shored up festive spirit
The 10-day Dasara festivities got off to a traditional start atop Chamundi Hills in Mysuru on Wednesday with prayers for the welfare of the State. It also signalled the continuation of a hoary tradition that has made Dasara synonymous with Mysuru to showcase the best of the ancient and modern cultural practices that draw tourists in large numbers. The city has been decked up and illuminated for the event and this has shored up the festive spirit. While the Infosys Foundation chairperson Sudha Murty inaugurated the festival atop Chamundi Hills in the morning, Chief Minister H.D. Kumaraswamy launched the cultural programmes at the palace late in the evening. This signalled the commencement of cultural programmes at different venues in the city, including Ganabharathi, Town Hall, Kalamandira, Clock Tower, and Jaganmohan Palace among others. The more important events associated with Dasara in recent times include the Ahara Mela being held at the Scouts and Guides Ground and the MUDA Ground, near Lalitha Mahal Palace, which were also inaugurated. The Dasara Flower Show is among the biggest show-stoppers of the festival and was inaugurated at the Kuppanna Park (Nishat Bagh) and is expected to draw a good crowd. The Dasara Games torch light was also taken out across the city through a relay and about 24 events, including football, volleyball, fencing, swimming, kabbadi and traditional track and field events, will be held at different venues. While the Mysuru palace with its illumination will occupy centre stage for the cultural programmes in the evening, there will be other events during the day some of which will be inaugurated on Thursday. The Dasara exhibition which was introduced to promote industrialisation during the regime of the maharajas, was also inaugurated on Wednesday and will be open to the public for nearly 45 days. The KSRTC marked the occasion by inducting a fleet of 50 new buses for deployment in and around Mysuru and they were flagged off by the Chief Minister. On the anvil in the days ahead are other popular events like Yuva Dasara, which will feature some of the popular singers from both Kannada and Hindi film industry, and it will be inaugurated on October 12 at the Maharaja’s College Ground.

Meanwhile, Minister in charge of Mysuru G.T. Deve Gowda urged the Chief Minister, who also holds the Finance portfolio, to allocate Rs. 500 crore for the development of the district. Speaking at the inauguration of the festivities, Mr. Gowda sought funds for upgrading infrastructure and developing industry.
