Where milk comes inside paper board

The packaging of milk has largely been a tale dominated by plastic. While pasteurised milk sealed in polyethylene pouches is still the mainstay of the doorstep delivery of milk at most homes across the country, consumers, especially in urban areas, have increasingly warmed to milk in Tetra Pak cartons, which help preserve the milk for a longer duration. The Tetra Pak involves multiple layers of plastic, paper as well as aluminium — a food industry standard — for preserving edible products. And the trouble with aluminium is that once it is bound to layers of packaging, it becomes hard to peel apart and recycle.Pune-based Rahul Uppal, a software-engineer-turned-entrepreneur, has ventured into offering the city’s consumers packaged milk in a third format: the globally popular Gable Top carton.
Mr. Uppal’s Woohoo doodh, which supplies to 1,500 households in Pune, is packaged in cartons that are made mainly of recyclable virgin paper board. The plastic used per packet is minimal. With two thin layers of polyethylene coating on the paperboard, the Gable Top cartons can be easily shredded in any paper mill and can be segregated as paper waste from households. The company also offers a “Pack Back” option to consumers, where the empty cartons are taken back from households for proper disposal.
