United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees in the Near East (UNRWA)

The United States and eight other Western nations that significantly contribute to the 2022 budget of the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees in the Near East (UNRWA) have chosen to suspend funding for the organisation.
UNRWA was founded in 1949 to help Palestinians who were displaced during the 1948 Arab-Israeli war.
It provides education, health, relief, social services, microfinance, and emergency aid programmes in Gaza, Israel’s occupied West Bank, Lebanon, Syria, and Jordan.
The organisation presently supports around 5.9 million Palestinian refugees and plays an important role in providing critical services to Palestinians in Gaza.
Israel has claimed that UNRWA employees participated in an attack on Israel on October 7, 2023, and that Hamas exploits UNRWA facilities for military operations and instills anti-Israel attitude in its schools. As a result, UNRWA funding has been suspended.
