Gavi, the Vaccine Alliance

Gavi, the global public-private health partnership, is working to persuade the administration of former President Donald Trump to continue its critical financial contributions. The alliance is highlighting how U.S. support could benefit the domestic vaccine sector.

About Gavi, the Vaccine Alliance

Founded in 2000 and headquartered in Geneva, Switzerland, Gavi is an independent organization that aims to expand access to life-saving vaccines for children in the world’s poorest regions. The alliance unites stakeholders from both public and private sectors—including governments from donor and recipient countries, the World Health Organization, UNICEF, the World Bank, vaccine manufacturers, research institutions, non-governmental organizations, and philanthropic entities.

Gavi’s mission is to increase the availability of new and underutilized vaccines by offering financial assistance, sharing technical knowledge, and influencing the market. Through strategic negotiations with vaccine producers, the alliance works to reduce costs and enhance affordability for low- and middle-income nations.

By integrating the scientific capabilities of global health organizations with the strategic insights of private industry, Gavi fosters collaboration toward universal immunization access. Since its inception, the alliance has immunized over 1.1 billion children and is estimated to have saved around 18.8 million lives as of 2023.

During the COVID-19 pandemic, Gavi played a leading role in COVAX, a global initiative aimed at ensuring fair distribution of COVID-19 vaccines. COVAX operated from 2020 to 2023.
