Annual programme at University of New South Wales
The sprawling lawn in front of the library at the University of New South Wales here on Tuesday saw a repeat of what has been an annual celebration for almost a decade now. On October 2 every year, a small crowd gathers on the lawn and marks the birth anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi by garlanding his statue. Home to a large population of international students, including a growing number of Indian students, the university includes the Gandhi Jayanti celebrations as an essential part of its annual calendar. Gandhiji’s was the first statue to be installed here. The Gandhi bust was given to the university in 2010, at a time when, as a university official put it, there were concerns about whether Australia was a truly multicultural country and safe for international students. Those were days when some attacks on overseas students, particularly Indians, had made headlines in India. The Gandhi bust, given by former Consul-General Amit Dasgupta, has now become a part of the university’s tradition. This year, the 150th birth anniversary of Gandhiji was commemorated with the garlanding of the bust in the presence of Indian Consul-General B. Vanlalvawna and UNSW Pro-VC International Laurie Pearcey. Later, there was a panel discussion on the Mahatma where Gandhian ideas were discussed.
