BSF gets fortified watchtowers

Concrete structures replace existing tin-thatch observation posts along the International Border
Nearly 350 watchtowers made of tin and mud and with thatched roofs have been replaced with concrete structures along the International Border with Pakistan in Jammu, a senior government official said. The official said that 450 more such structures are in the pipeline. The rudimentary structures that doubled up as watchtowers or observation posts were right at the zero point along the border.
Cross-border firing
The cross-border firing is at its highest since the National Democratic Alliance government came to power in 2014. While 127 incidents were reported for the corresponding period in 2014, the number stood at 350 and 204 in 2015 and 2016, respectively. The BSF recently operationalised the comprehensive integrated border management system (CIBMS) along a 11-km stretch on the border to detect and stop infiltration from Pakistan. Through advanced sensors and radars, the CIBMS has the capability to detect any type of movement on ground, water or below the ground.
“The CIBMS is a new mode of guarding the border without exposing the jawans to bullets from the other side. We will soon be shifting to quick reaction teams that will take action as soon as any intrusion occur. Men will get respite from standing guard in inclement weather and this will be an effective and cheaper way of protecting the border also,” the official said.
