Centre approves ‘Prayagraj’

The Union Home Ministry has approved a Uttar Pradesh government proposal to rename Allahabad as Prayagraj.

The decision comes days ahead of the Kumbh Mela being organised by the State government in the city, and over two months after the State Cabinet decided to rename it. The Kumbh Mela will start on January 15, Makar Sankranti, and conclude on March 4, Maha Shivaratri.

The Centre has agreed to the renaming of at least 25 towns and villages nationwide in the past one year. The plan to rename Faizabad district in Uttar Pradesh as Ayodhya is yet to come in from the State government. The Home Ministry clears the name change proposals after the Ministry of Railways, the Department of Posts and the Survey of India confirm that no city, town or village has similar names.
