Tiny chips inserted in U.S. computer equipment manufactured in China were used as part of a vast effort by Beijing to steal U.S. technology secrets, a report said on Thursday. The Bloomberg News report said the chips, the size of a grain of rice, were used on equipment made for Amazon, which first alerted U.S. authorities, and Apple, and possibly for other companies and government agencies. Citing unnamed U.S. officials, Bloomberg said an unit of the People’s Liberation. Army was involved the operation that placed the chips on equipment manufactured in China for U.S.-based Super Micro Computer Inc. Super Micro also manufactured equipment for Department of Defense data centres, the CIA’s drone operations, and onboard networks of Navy warships. Meanwhile, U.S. Vice President Mike Pence on Thursday accused China of seeking a change of power in the White House, stepping up allegations of electoral interference. “To put it bluntly, President Trump’s leadership is working; China wants a different American president,” Mr. Pence said.
