Disparity in Bru rehabilitation package, says Mizoram CM

‘Those who have already returned deserve their fair share’
Mizoram Chief Minister Lal Thanhawla has accused the Centre of coming up with an “uneven rehabilitation package” for two sets of Bru refugees.
In a meeting at the Congress office in State capital Aizawl, Mr. Thanhawla said the Ministry of Home Affairs had been denying a proper rehabilitation package to about 300 families of Brus who returned home to Mizoram from Tripura, while focussing on those who resisted repatriation. More than 32,000 Bru or Reang tribal people fled Mizoram in 1997 after ethnic clashes and have been living in six transit camps in Kanchanpur area of Tripura for the last 21 years. There have been seven phases of repatriation, but many returned to the camps saying that conditions in Mizoram were not conducive for living.
Letter to Home Minister
“I have written a letter to Home Minister Rajnath Singh to look into the matter and arrange a similar package for the obedient Bru citizens who have already been repatriated. The uneven package could hamper the integrity of the Brus, and those who have already returned deserve their fair share,” the CM said. The 300 repatriated families have formed a forum to demand a rehabilitation package on a par with the one for those who are yet to return to Mizoram. On July 3, the MHA, in a quadripartite agreement involving the Mizoram and Tripura governments and the Mizoram Bru Displaced People’s Forum, offered a one-time financial assistance of Rs. 4 lakh to each displaced Bru family staying in Tripura camps at present, a house and free rations for two years.
