An unmanned testing aircraft of the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) crashed on a farmland in Chitradurga district of Karnataka on Sunday. No one was injured.

The Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) is the premier agency under the Department of Defence Research and Development in the Ministry of Defence of the Government of India, charged with the military’s research and development. It was established in 1958 by the Government of India, under the Ministry of Defence (Raksha Mantralay).

The development of the Prithvi series of short-range ballistic missiles, which are capable of hitting targets up to 350 kilometers away.

  • The development of the Agni series of ballistic missiles, which are capable of hitting targets up to 5,000 kilometers away.
  • The development of the Arjun tank, which is the first indigenously designed and developed main battle tank of India.
  • The development of the Trishul anti-aircraft missile, which is capable of hitting targets up to 9 kilometers away.
  • The development of the Pinaka multi-barrel rocket launcher, which can fire up to 12 rockets in 44 seconds.
  • The development of the Tejas light combat aircraft, which is the first indigenously designed and developed fighter aircraft of India.
  • The development of the Nag anti-tank missile, which is capable of hitting targets up to 4 kilometers away.
  • The development of the Brahmos cruise missile, which is a joint venture between India and Russia. It is capable of hitting targets up to 290 kilometers away.
  • The development of the Akash surface-to-air missile system, which is capable of hitting targets up to 30 kilometers away.
  • The development of the MRSAM (Medium Range Surface to Air Missile) system, which is a joint venture between India and Israel. It is capable of hitting targets up to 70 kilometers away.

DRDO’s work has been recognized by many awards, including the Padma Bhushan, the Padma Shri, and the Shanti Swarup Bhatnagar Prize. It has also been awarded the status of “Deemed University” by the University Grants Commission (UGC).

DRDO is a major contributor to India’s defence capabilities. It is playing a key role in making India a self-reliant and strong nation.
