FAME India Scheme (Faster Adoption and Manufacturing of Hybrid and Electric Vehicles)

Nodal Ministry: Ministry of Heavy Industries
Launched: 2015 (under National Electric Mobility Mission Plan – NEMMP 2020)

Aim

To promote electric and hybrid vehicles in India by offering incentives and creating charging infrastructure — reducing fossil fuel use and pollution.

Phases

  • Phase I (2015–2019): Focus on pilot projects, R&D, and early adoption.
  • Phase II (2019–present): ₹10,000 crore outlay to support
    • 10 lakh e-2 wheelers
    • 5 lakh e-3 wheelers
    • 55,000 e-4 wheelers
    • 7,000 e-buses
    • Charging stations across cities and highways.

Key Features

  • Incentives for advanced battery-based EVs (like lithium-ion).
  • Focus on public and shared transport (buses, 3-wheelers, taxis).
  • Localization requirement for vehicles and components.
  • Development of charging stations (1 every 3×3 km in cities, every 25 km on highways).

Achievements

  • Boosted awareness and demand for EVs.
  • Over 2.7 lakh EVs supported under Phase I.

Challenges

  • Slow subsidy disbursal and infrastructure rollout.
  • Dependence on imported batteries.
  • Delay in charging station setup.
