Following a Meteor.

An unusually bright meteor was seen at 7-15 P.M. yesterday [August 1, in Calcutta]. Its direction as observed from the eastern end of the Curzon Gardens was nearly S.S.W. and it appeared to fall vertically first coming into view at an altitude of about 50 degrees, increasing in brilliancy until it was a ball of fire of considerable apparent diameter when it appeared to move more slowly, and then its size was reduced rapidly and it ended in a streak which faded from sight when at an altitude of less than 10 degrees. Its vertical path and large apparent size suggest that it was falling towards a point not more than 40 miles away, though its retarded speed and final disappearance indicated that it was probably all vaporised.
