The scheme of giving small money grants to adolescent convicts on release from the Tanjore Jail to enable them to start in life is reported, all things considered, to be a success. The success of the treatment of adolescent convicts must depend, Mr. A.J. Nicholas, the Superintendent, points out on two matters — after-care and detention in the institution for a sufficiently long time to enable the boys to pick up some kind of work. As regards the first point, “it is hoped,” states the Government Order on the Report just issued, “that District Magistrates will do all they can to ensure that satisfactory arrangements are made for a convict’s welfare on his release and intimated in good time to the Superintendent of the Tanjore Jail so that the convict may feel that he is not going out of it uncared for.’’
