Inamdars and tenants in Mysore.

A Commission to examine the relationship between Inamdars and their tenants in Mysore has just been appointed by the Government of His Highness the Maharajah. The rights and responsibilities of this class of landholders in the State are not known with any definiteness, especially in the state of things now prevailing, so that endless questions have been raised in the Representative Assembly and elsewhere on the subject. Such questions as to how the responsibilities of an Inamdar and the ryots of an Inam village, in regard to the restoration and maintenance of irrigation works situated wholly within the Inam village, should be fixed, and as to who should be held responsible for contribution and water-rate payable to Government on lands newly converted into wet in an Inam village from a Government source of irrigation – questions which are as important as they are complicated – are in Mysore still the subject of contention between the parties concerned.
