President Donald Trump on Monday slammed India for imposing “tremendously high tariffs” on American products and said that New Delhi wanted to have a trade deal with America to keep him happy. At a press conference on the new U.S.-Mexico-Canada agreement, Mr. Trump listed out the deals that are under negotiation, including with Japan, European Union, China and India. Describing India as a “tariff king”, the President reiterated his allegations that New Delhi had a high tariff rate on various U.S. products. “When we send Harley Davidson motorcycle and other things to India, they charge us very very high tariffs. I have spoken to Prime Minister [Narendra] Modi and he is going to reduce them substantially,” he said. He warned that the U.S. would impose similar tariffs on Indian imports. He said negotiations on the trade deal were being carried out by U.S. Trade Representative Robert Lighthizer. “India called and said, ‘we want to start negotiations immediately’,” he said. “When Bob Lighthizer said, ‘What happened?’ They said, ‘No, we want to keep your President happy.’ Isn’t that nice?” Mr. Trumpsaid.
