Jaitley back as Finance Minister

He took rest for three months after he underwent kidney transplant Union Minister Arun Jaitley on Thursday resumed duties as the country’s Finance and Corporate Affairs Minister after a gap of three months during which he underwent a kidney transplant surgery. Mr. Jaitley spent the day meeting senior officials in both the ministries including Finance Secretary Hashmukh Adhia and the chairpersons of the Central Board of Direct Taxes (CBDT) and the Central Board of Indirect Taxes & Customs (CBIC). Visitors to his room would be cut to the minimum and be required to cover their shoes with the blue plastic bags used in hospitals. Doctors have cleared Mr. Jaitley’s return to work but have advised him to cut his public interaction to the minimum to protect him from contracting any infection. Earlier, announcing his return, a Rashtrapati Bhavan communiqué read, “The President of India, as advised by the Prime Minister, has directed to assign the portfolios of the Minister of Finance and Minister of Corporate Affairs to Shri Arun Jaitley.” In Mr. Jaitley’s absence, Railway Minister Piyush Goyal was holding the additional charge of the Finance and Corporate Affairs portfolios.
