Poor show in Kashmir region; Jammu registers 84%
Kashmir recorded a 30.3% turnout in the seventh phase of panchayat elections on Tuesday, while the Jammu region registered a heavy 84.8%. “An average 75.3% polling was witnessed during the seventh phase in Jammu and Kashmir,” Chief Electoral Officer Shaleen Kabra said. Budgam in the Kashmir region recorded the lowest turnout of 13.1%. Budgam in central Kashmir, close to south Kashmir, saw many encounters this year and remained volatile throughout the year. South Kashmir’s another volatile district of Anantnag registered a low 15.5% vote. “Kupwara in Kashmir region recorded a 45% polling — the highest — followed by Ganderbal at 30.9%, Bandipora at 25.2% and Baramulla at 17.8%,” Mr. Kabra said. Poonch and Reasi in Jammu recorded the region’s highest voter turnout of 86%. “Reasi saw 86.7%, Samba 85.5%, Jammu 83.7% and Rajouri 84% polling,” Mr. Kabra said.
Two more phases to go
No violence was reported during the polling. Two more phases of polling is left for the panchayat elections, being held for the first time since 2011. “A total of 5,575 candidates were in the fray for 341 sarpanch and 1,798 panch seats. Eighty-five sarpanchs and 912 panchs were elected unopposed in this phase,” said Mr. Kabra.
