Overall turnoutis 56.7%, sayspoll official
Jammu and Kashmir recorded 56.7% turnout on Monday in the first phase of urban local bodies elections for 321 wards, with just 8.3 % voters turning up in districts in Kashmir.
Polling remained peaceful as no major incident of violence was reported in any designated ‘hypersensitive’ wards in the Valley, barring two minor incidents of stone-pelting in Budgam and Bandipora. Officials said only 7,057 voters of the 84,692-strong electorate voted in 83 wards in six districts of Kashmir. “The overall polling percentage was recorded at 56.7%,” Chief Electoral Officer Shaleen Kabra said. The polling percentage in most districts in the Valley remained in single digits. Bandipora saw the lowest of 3.4%.
Significant dip
Kupwara, the home town of Peoples Conference leader Sajad Lone, witnessed the highest of 32.2%. The polls witnessed a significant dip in the level of participation compared to the 2011 panchayat polls with 81% turnout.
