Lawlessness in Ramnad.

Information reached Madura last evening [Sept. 18] that a serious rioting was committed in Kamuthi on Tuesday [Sept. 17]. Kamuthi is an important business centre inhabited mostly by the Nadars, and is situated in the interior of the Ramand district, 56 miles from Madura and twenty miles from the nearest Railway station. On hearing the news, I started to the place by night to know personally what had actually occurred. I arrived in Kamuthi this morning after a hard journey and found to my bewilderment on entering into the southern portion of the town, the great disaster that happened to it. The people were all panic stricken. A large number of shops and pucca buildings, not to speak of a great many hovels and huts, were burnt down to cinder. Some half a dozen country carts were found charred. The men and women who were made homeless on account of the havoc wrought to their habitations were seen squatting in utter despair in the midst of the rains and the shopkeepers were working in the debris to search if anything of a valuable nature was left by the rioters and looters.
