Leopard trapped near Madukkarai

A leopard, aged above five, was trapped when it walked into a cage placed by the Forest Department at Madukkarai in Coimbatore on Wednesday. It was later released near Thengumarada in Sathyamangalam Tiger Reserve (STR). The leopard, lured by a goat used as a bait, walked into the trap placed at Mayiladigal Thottam under Karadimadai beat in Madukkarai forest range. The goat was not preyed on by the leopard as it was tied in a separate compartment in the cage. M. Senthil Kumar, Forest Range Officer, Madukkarai Forest Range, said that the carnivore was trapped around 3.45 a.m. “ The cage was placed at Mayiladigal Thottam 15 days ago, after keeping it in another location for around 15 days. The carnivore was trapped after a patient wait for 30 days” said M. Kumar. The leopard was examined by a veterinary surgeon of the Department and it was found healthy. Assistant Principal Chief Conservator of Forests Deepak Srivastava and District Forest Officer D. Venkatesh inspected the place and made arrangements for its release into the forest. The leopard had preyed on four livestock in and around Madukkarai in the last two to three months.
