Linking of rivers will benefit State, says CM

The linking of Rivers Godavari and Cauvery proposed by the Centre will enable Tamil Nadu to get as much as 125 tmc of water, which will go a long way in making the State drought-free one, Chief Minister Edappadi K. Palaniswami said at Mecheri, near here, on Saturday. Speaking at a function to inaugurate the Mecheri – Nangavalli drinking water scheme, Mr. Palaniswami said he held discussion with Nitin Gadkari, Union Minister of Water Resources, who was fully in favour of the project. The proposal was under the consideration of the Centre. Mr. Gadkari is evincing keen interest in this project and has assured its implementation, he said. The 125 tmc of additional water will go a long way in putting an end to the drought conditions in the State. Mr. Palaniswami said that getting additional water with the Godavari – Cauvery merger scheme, will also pave way for the implementation of the Mettur surplus water scheme proposed by the State government. Mr. Palaniswami said that a good number of tanks in the four Assembly constituencies of Mettur, Omalur, Edappadi and Sankagiri, which were lying dry for a major part of the year, will get adequate water with the implementation of the Mettur surplus water scheme. The conservation of water in the lakes and tanks will ensure farm operations and increase in the groundwater level to a big extent in the surrounding areas. Mr. Palaniswami said that the Public Works Department officials were already involved in preparing the detailed report on the Mettur Surplus water scheme.
