Mullaperiyar: T.N. not to reduce water level

The Tamil Nadu government has taken the stand that there was no need to reduce the water level of the Mullaperiyar dam below the present 142 ft. In response to reports of Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan’s letter to his Tamil Nadu counterpart Edappadi K. Palaniswami, requesting him to lower the level up to 139 ft, a senior official here said that the “entire inflow” would be discharged and the water level maintained at 142 ft. The position was said to have been conveyed by the Principal Secretary (Public Works) S. K. Prabakar to his Kerala counterpart. The stand of Tamil Nadu is based on the verdict of the Supreme Court in 2014, allowing State to store water up to 142 ft. Ten days ago, chairman of the SC-appointed panel, Gulshan Raj, visited the dam and stated that it was “strong enough” to store water up to 142 ft. He expressed satisfaction over the functioning of the dam.
