The Manipur High Court on Wednesday issued notices to top bureaucrats and police officers of the Manipur government, the Union Home Secretary, the General Officer Commander in-charge of the Indian Army’s Eastern Command, and an Inspector-General of the Assam Rifles (AR-South) on a contempt petition filed by a Meitei body

Assam Rifles

  • The Assam Rifles (AR) is a central paramilitary force responsible for border security, counter-insurgency, and maintaining law and order in Northeast India.
  • Its primary duty involves guarding the Indo-Myanmar border.
  • The AR is one of the Central Armed Police Forces (CAPF) administered by the Ministry of Home Affairs.
  • The Indian Army maintains operational control of the AR. As a police force, its recruitment, perks, promotions, and retirement policies are governed by CAPF rules.

The Assam Rifles was founded in 1835 as the Cachar Levy by the British East India Company. It was originally tasked with protecting British settlements in the Assam region from tribal raids. In 1873, the force was renamed the Assam Rifles. The AR has since played a significant role in the defense of India’s northeast border. It has also been involved in counter-insurgency operations against insurgent groups in the region.

The Assam Rifles is a highly decorated force. It has been awarded 13 Param Vir Chakras, 20 Maha Vir Chakras, 143 Vir Chakras, and 1,135 Shaurya Chakras.

The AR has also been awarded several unit citations,including the following:

  • The Param Vir Chakra (PVC) is the highest military decoration in India, awarded for acts of valour in the face of the enemy.
  • The Maha Vir Chakra (MVC) is the second-highest military decoration in India, awarded for acts of valour in the face of the enemy.
  • The Vir Chakra (VC) is the third-highest military decoration in India, awarded for acts of valour in the face of the enemy.
  • The Shaurya Chakra (SC) is the fourth-highest military decoration in India, awarded for acts of bravery in the face of danger.
