Inspector Nicholas of D II Police station [in Madras] charged one Subbaraya Nathan, a hackney carriage driver, Syyed Omar, piece goods merchant, Esplanade, and Hassan for being in possession of and transporting 6 visses and 3 ½ palams of opium valued at Rs. 900 on the night of the 17th May last. It would appear that on the night of the occurrence the said quantity of opium was placed by the 2nd and 3rd accused in a cart belonging to Subbaraya Nathan and was being taken from the house of one Muttusa Hussain, where the Police arrested all the three accused on suspicion. [In the Police Court, Egmore on August 28], His Worship found all the accused guilty and sentenced the first accused to pay a fine of Rs. 200 or in default to four months’ rigorous imprisonment, the second accused to pay a fine of Rs. 1,000 or in default to six months’ rigorous imprisonment and the 3rd accused to pay a fine of Rs. 400 or in default to undergo six months’ rigorous imprisonment.
