Pittsburgh shooting suspect wrote anti-Semitic posts

Evidence suggests attack on synagogue was motivated by his anti-Jewish views
The gunman who killed eight men and three women during the Shabbat services at a Pittsburgh synagogue on Saturday morning has been charged with 29 counts of federal crimes related to firearm offences. Meanwhile, the chief medical examiner of the Allegheny County named the dead on Sunday. The oldest was a 97-year-old woman, Rose Mallinger, and the youngest a 54-year-old man, David Rosenthal, who died with his brother Cecil, 59. The suspect, Robert G. Bowers, 46, a resident of Baldwin, in the Pittsburgh metropolitan area, was taken into custody following an exchange of gunfire with police officers who had arrived on the scene of the attack at the Tree of Life Synagogue in the Squirrel Hill neighbourhood. He remained in hospital on Sunday, having had surgery, and is expected to appear before a judge on Monday afternoon. Saturday’s was the latest in a series of recent crimes that have targeted people based on their religion or race or political beliefs. A series of package bombs were sent last week to CNN, top Democrats and donors to the Democratic Party. Also, two African Americans were murdered on Wednesday in a store in Kentucky by a White man. The alleged killer, Gregory Bush, had a history of mental illness and had made racist threats, CNN said, citing court records. President Donald Trump has drawn widespread criticism, including from several prominent Republicans, for letting political divisions polarise society. On Saturday, Mr. Trump called on the country to come together to fight hate crimes and said, “It will require all of us working together to extract the hateful poison of anti-Semitism.” “The scourge of anti-Semitism can’t be ignored,” Mr Trump said while in Illinois, on the campaign trail. Mr. Trump’s son-in-law, Jared Kushner is Jewish. In response to a question on whether tighter gun control laws could have prevented the attack, Mr. Trump said that gun control laws had “little to do” with it and suggested that had the synagogue been given better security, the situation could have been averted. “Dangerous weapons are putting our citizens in harm’s way,” Pennsylvania Governor and Democrat Tom Wolf said on Saturday.
