Rajya Sabha adjourned over Rafale deal row

SP protests over Deoria sex abuse
The Rajya Sabha was adjourned over the Congress’ protests over the Rafale deal and the Samajwadi Party’s protest over incidents of sexual abuse at a shelter home in Uttar Pradesh. Congress MP Anand Sharma had moved a motion under Rule 267 to suspend all business to discuss the Rafale deal. The Congress has been demanding a Joint Parliamentary Committee probe into the aircraft deal.
Leader of the Opposition Ghulam Nabi Azad criticised the government saying that the Opposition “did not get time to initiate a single short duration discussion or calling attention motion.”Newly elected Deputy Chairman Harivansh, who was in the chair, did not allow debate on either issues and adjourned the house. Rajya Sabha Chairman M. Venkaiah Naidu, who chaired the proceedings post adjournment, berated the Opposition, saying that it should get its priorities right. “There are many important issues that we must discuss like the death of over 20 persons in Kerala floods,” Mr. Naidu said.
