‘Save Constitution’ rally in Hubballi

Copies of the Bhagavad Gita and the Manu Smriti burnt
Hundreds of people took out a protest march in Hubballi on Tuesday as part of the “Save Constitution” rally to condemn the burning of a copy of the Constitution in New Delhi and demanding steps to save the Constitution. A federation of various Dalit organisations, “Vividha Dalita Sangha Samsthegala Mahamandala”, had given the call for the protest rally to condemn the incident in which a copy of the Constitution was burnt at Jantar Mantar in New Delhi by members of an organisation. The protestors from different places in Dharwad district first congregated at Nehru Stadium before proceeding towards Station Road via Town Hall. Waving blue flags, the participants began the protest march from Ambedkar’s statue near the Head Post Office, where the Dalit leaders garlanded the statue of B.R. Ambedkar before leading the protest march.
The protestors raised slogans seeking steps to save the Constitution, which they said was under threat. They also raised slogans seeking stringent action against those involved in burning the copy of the Constitution and those who were behind the act. Throughout the march, slogans praising Ambedkar reverberated in the air. Covering the thoroughfares of the city, including Lamington Road and Sangolli Rayanna Circle, the protestors reached the landmark Kittur Chennamma Circle, where a public meeting was held. Participating in the public meeting along with other religious heads, seer of Gadag Tontadarya Mutt Sri Siddhalinga Swami criticised the Union government for “keeping quiet” despite such grave offence. Dalit leaders Pitambarappa Bilar, Premanath Chikkatumbal, Maruti Doddamani, Gurunath Ullikashi and several others condemned the incident in strong words and sought quick action by the Union government.
