SC allays fears on streaming of court work

Chief Justice of India Dipak Misra told the government on Friday that cases of constitutional importance and social matters of constitutional gravity, even if heard by a three-judge Bench, should be beamed live to the masses. The Chief Justice, heading a Bench of three, was assuaging apprehensions raised by the government that matrimonial cases and cases involving victims of sexual assault or violence should not be live-streamed.

With this, the court made it clear that the objective of live-streaming of the proceedings was not publicity in a country where privacy is a fundamental right, but rather, reaching out to the public to show them how Constitutional and social matters are decided by the court. The court asked Attorney-General K.K. Venugopal to compile holistic guidelines on the aspect of live-streaming. In an earlier hearing, the Supreme Court had said it was ready to go live while the government had mooted a separate TV channel for streaming court proceedings.
