SC notifies norms for ‘senior advocate’ status

The Supreme Court has notified guidelines for according ‘senior advocate’ designation to lawyers and constituted a five-member permanent committee headed by the Chief Justice of India to shortlist candidates.The names will then be sent to the Full Court, comprising all apex court judges, for a decision. Candidates can apply or the committee can suo motu recommend a candidate to the Full Court.
The apex court has notified the norms in pursuant to the guidelines laid down in its judgment on October 12, 2017.
Committee meeting
The committee would meet twice a year in January and July. It would have a permanent secretariat to facilitate the collating of details of the probable candidates.
The finalised guidelines are titled “Supreme Court Guidelines to regulate Conferment of Designation of Senior Advocates, 2018.”
The notification says that the secretariat would invite applications annually.
