Shortage of forms upsets NRC applicants

Many of the nearly 2,500 centres for updating the National Register of Citizens (NRC) were short of forms on Tuesday, the first day of the claims, objections and corrections round of the exercise. This phase provides a 60-day window of hope for 40,07,707 of the 32.9 million applicants who were left out of the NRC draft published on July 30. The crowd at some centres in areas such as Uzan Bazaar, Bamunimaidam and Hatigaon here thinned after people came to know that some forms were not available. “My name is wrongly listed and I wanted to get it corrected on day one itself, but it seems the authorities don’t value our time,” said Zafar Ali, a resident. Another Guwahati resident, who declined to be quoted, said, “The Supreme Court, which is monitoring the exercise, should make a note of a day lost for people like us.” NRC Nagarik Seva Kendras officials denied reports that they are holding back the forms. “We are issuing the same specimen forms provided temporarily in August but after striking out the first five in the list of 15 documents to be submitted by the left-out people,” an official said. The five documents excluded are the 1951 NRC, voters’ lists up to March 24, 1971, ration card, refugee registration certificate and citizenship certificate.
