India has embarked on the ambitious “Sudarshan Chakra” shield project—a fully integrated, multi-layered air and space defence system designed to protect vital national assets and population centres by 2030. Combining satellite surveillance, advanced radars, directed energy weapons (DEWs), and missile systems, this initiative marks a transformative step in India’s quest for comprehensive aerospace security and technological sovereignty.

  • Strategic Objective:
    Mission Sudarshan Chakra aims to create a national defensive umbrella against aerial threats ranging from missiles and aircraft to drones and hypersonic systems.
  • Space-Based Surveillance:
    The shield will incorporate 52 new surveillance satellites under the Space-Based Surveillance (SBS) Programme to provide real-time tracking of airborne threats across India’s borders and oceanic regions.

    Artificial Intelligence (AI), machine learning algorithms, data analytics, and quantum computing will enhance situational awareness and accelerate decision-making in live combat environments.
  • Over-the-Horizon Radars:
    These radars can detect targets beyond the line of sight by reflecting signals off the ionosphere, offering early warning of incoming aircraft or missiles hundreds of kilometres away.
  • Directed Energy Weapons (DEWs):

    The system will prioritize metropolitan cities, critical infrastructure, nuclear facilities, and major defence installations, eventually expanding into a nationwide command-and-control network.
