Unfortunately the influenza epidemic does not show any indication of abatement in Madras City and in the mofussil. Official figures in regard to the latter are not available, but in the City, the Health Officer has reported that in the week ending with the 5th instant, the number of deaths owing to the `mystery fever’, had increased from 162 to 354. From reports that are reaching us, we are afraid that the epidemic is daily claiming a larger number of victims than previously. The number of attacks is very large and there are few families which are unaffected, but the fact that the number of recoveries is also very large has been the only circumstance that has prevented the prevailing apprehensions from developing into a panic. It is feared, however, that mortality is increasing and we would ask what steps the authorities are taking to combat it and provide the public with the necessary assistance.
