Influenza appears to have broken out in parts of Hyderabad and Secunderabad. It is much regretted that this should have come when plague is still virulent and more or less widespread. At Bombay, it is hoped that the corner has been turned with the terrible second influenza epidemic that has been raging there for the last these weeks. The registered death rate in the city last week is shown by compiled returns issued to-day [October 8] to have been over 25 per cent per annum, that is approximately ten times the normal for this season of the year and the excess is wholly due to the influenza and the pneumonia which accompanies it. Small pox, Plague and Cholera were practically absent. It is difficult to ascertain the exact number of deaths daily now because through sickness and overwork the municipal registration staff have got behind with their returns, but it is definitely known that mortality has been declining steadily if slightly, during the past few days. Several organisations and hospitals have specially helped municipal health authorities and appeals are still made for further organised bands of helpers.
