They entered India illegally in 2012

The seven Rohingya Muslims being deported from Assam had settled near Nagatilla area on the outskirts of Silchar after entering India illegally in 2012 but were picked up by the police that year. Officials said they wanted to return home in Rakhine province of Myanmar. All the seven are residents of Keito village in the Cheptak police station limits in Rakhine. Myanmar officials had cross-checked their identities before agreeing to take them back, an officer of a police unit dealing with foreigners said on condition of anonymity. The deportation follows advocate Prashant Bhushan’s failed bid for a hearing of a public interest litigation petition in the Supreme Court for restraining the government to send Rohingya refugees back to Myanmar. A senior officer of Assam Police’s Border Organisation, which deals with the detection of foreigners, said the Rohingya were foreigners who came illegally, not refugees. He said deportation was a routine process with 53 Bangladeshis, a Pakistani and an Afghan national being sent back recently. There are at least 30 more Rohingya people in detention camps in Assam. Manipur’s Sajiwa Central Jail has 22 of them.
