Upper House adjourned

The Rajya Sabha witnessed repeated adjournments on Monday amid protests by members of various parties, including those of the Samajwadi Party and the Bahujan Samaj Party who alleged misuse of the CBI. The Congress demanded a Joint Parliamentary Committee to investigate the Rafale deal, while SP and BSP members gathered in the well to protest against the CBI investigation into a case of alleged illegal mining of minor minerals between 2012 and 2016 in Uttar Pradesh. SP leader Akhilesh Yadav was then Chief Minister and had held the additional portfolio of Mining. Left party members, too, got up to raise the issue of violence allegedly by BJP workers in Kerala over the entry of women into the Sabrimala temple. In the first half, Chairman M. Venkaiah Naidu said he had received notice from some members under Rule 267 for suspension of business to take up discussions on the issues, but he did not allow it. He asked the members to resume their seats and allow the House to function. “This is not the parliamentary way of functioning. You can discuss all the issues under relevant rules,” he said. As his repeated pleas went unheeded, he adjourned the proceedings till 2 p.m. As the protests continued after the House reassembled, the Deputy Chairman adjourned the proceedings for the day. The House session has been extended by one more day till Wednesday.
