We didn’t object to GST rationalisation: Cong.

The Congress on Tuesday denied reports that Finance Ministers from Opposition-ruled States at the GST Council had objected to recently announced reduction in tax rates of several items. “An impression has been sought to be conveyed that the BJP was trying to reduce the taxes while the Congress or Opposition Finance Ministers tried to stop this. I have come here to dispel this notion,” said Punjab Finance Minister Manpreet Singh Badal, while addressing a press conference at the Congress headquarters.

He said the government had been ignoring Congress’s suggestions to rationalise rates until the Gujarat election. Congress spokesperson Gourabh Vallabh claimed that GST was not a one nation, one tax but “one nation, seven tax slabs.” Former Minister Jairam Ramesh tweeted on Tuesday that the Centre’s flip-flop over GST was like climate change.
