We need our own BRI, says British MP

The U.K. is “concerned” at certain aspects of China’s Belt and Road Initiative (BRI) and is keen to work with countries like India and Australia so that everyone gets the opportunity for “our own belts and our own roads” and not just one, said Tom Tugendhat, MP and Chair of the Foreign Affairs Committee of the British Parliament. “We are looking at the role of China and the BRI and we are looking at how this plays out. There are some things that are positive and some things we are concerned about. The port of Colombo (Hambantota) is a concern as it does not speak of free trade. It speaks of a different form of control,” Mr. Tugendhat said in a conversation with The Hindu . He said the U.K. was very keen that its relationship with India alongside with Australia and many others “is enabled to ensure that India’s position is secured and all of us have the opportunity for our own belts and our own roads and not just one.” Mr. Tugendhat, an Army veteran, was in India for the centenary commemoration of the First World War and to pay tribute to the Indian contribution in the Great War.
