Manu Bhaker at the Paris Olympics

Context: Manu Bhaker from Haryana, currently ranked World No. 5, made history as the first Indian athlete in the post-independence era to win multiple medals in a single edition of the Summer Olympics held in Paris.

  • Manu is also the first Indian woman to secure an Olympic medal in shooting.
  • She becomes the second Indian ever to win two medals at the same Olympic Games, following Norman Pritchard, who achieved this feat in the 200m sprint and 200m hurdles during the 1900 Paris Olympics.
  • Additionally, Manu is the fourth Indian to win multiple medals at the Olympics, joining the ranks of Norman Pritchard (athletics), Sushil Kumar (wrestling), and P.V. Sindhu (badminton).
