Prelims – Disease
Context (TH): Human Metapneumovirus (HMPV), a respiratory illness with symptoms similar to the flu and COVID-19, is currently spreading in China.
HMPV
Human Metapneumovirus (HMPV) is a virus that causes mild respiratory infections, often resembling a common cold. First identified in 2001, it belongs to the same family of viruses as respiratory syncytial virus (RSV), measles, and mumps.
Affected Areas
HMPV primarily affects the nose, throat, and lungs. It is more commonly observed during the winter and early spring months.
At-Risk Populations
Children, the elderly, and individuals with weak immune systems are at greater risk of severe illness from HMPV infections.
Transmission
HMPV spreads through:
- Direct contact with an infected individual.
- Indirect contact via contaminated surfaces.
Signs and Symptoms
The common symptoms of HMPV infection include:
- Cough
- Runny or blocked nose
- Sore throat
- Fever
- Wheezing
Symptoms typically appear 3 to 6 days after exposure to the virus.
Course of Illness
For most people, the symptoms resolve on their own with home care. However, in some cases, the infection can lead to more serious respiratory conditions like bronchitis or pneumonia.
