Kannadippaya Earns GI Tag Status

GS3 – Science & Technology – IPR – Geographical Indication

Kannadippaya, a traditional tribal mat, has officially become Kerala’s first tribal handicraft to receive the Geographical Indication (GI) tag, marking a significant milestone in the recognition of indigenous craft traditions.

What is Kannadippaya?

The term ‘Kannadippaya’ translates to ‘mirror mat’, a name inspired by the product’s glossy, mirror-like surface that reflects light, lending it an elegant aesthetic. These mats are woven using the soft inner splits of reed bamboo, primarily Teinostachyum wightii, with occasional use of Ochlandra species.

Distinctive Qualities
  • Natural Composition: Made from eco-friendly materials, the mats are fully biodegradable.
  • Functional Attributes: Their construction provides natural thermal insulation—keeping interiors warm during winter and cool during summer.
  • Artistic Design: Known for a fine, reflective weave, they stand out for their detailed craftsmanship and visual appeal.
Cultural Significance and Tribal Heritage

Kannadippaya is a symbol of cultural identity and traditional wisdom, handcrafted by various indigenous communities such as the Oorali, Mannan, Muthuva, Malayan, Kadar, Ulladan, Malayarayan, and Hill Pulaya tribes. Their craftsmanship reflects generations of ecological knowledge, artistry, and sustainable living.

Geographical Indication in India: A Snapshot
  • India’s First GI Tag: Darjeeling Tea, awarded during 2004–2005, was the pioneer product to receive this recognition.
  • Leading States: In terms of the total number of GI-tagged items, Uttar Pradesh holds the top spot, followed closely by Tamil Nadu.
