Candida tropicalis Infections on the Rise

Prelims Bits

A rise in Candida tropicalis infections has been linked to the use of tebuconazole, an azole-based fungicide commonly applied in farming and gardening.

About the Fungus:
    • A yeast species from the Candida genus.
    • Endemic to India but found globally.
    • Highly pathogenic, especially in immunocompromised individuals (e.g., cancer patients, diabetics).
    • Mortality rate: 55–60%.
Habitats:
    • Marine environments (seawater, sediments, mangroves).
    • Soil, fruits, human gut, and other food surfaces.
Health Impact:
    • Particularly dangerous for neutropenic patients (low neutrophils).
    • Often triggered by antibiotic use or high sugar levels.
    • Commonly spreads via nosocomial (hospital-acquired) transmission between healthcare workers and patients.
