The Navigation with Indian Constellation or NavIC, the seven-satellite system that makes up India’s version of the American GPS (global positioning system), will soon be integrated into Aadhaar enrolment devices across the country, the Department of Space (DoS) told the Parliamentary Committee of Science and Technology.
NavIC
- NavIC (Navigation with Indian Constellation) is an autonomous regional satellite navigation system that provides accurate real-time positioning and timing services.
- It is an independent navigation system that is not dependent on any other global navigation satellite system (GNSS) such as GPS.
- NavIC was developed by the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) and was launched in 2018.
- It is a constellation of seven satellites that are in geostationary orbits. NavIC provides two levels of service: the Standard Positioning Service (SPS) and the Restricted Service (RS).
NavIC is used for a variety of applications, including:
- Positioning and navigation
- Timing
- Disaster management
- Land and maritime surveillance
- Resource monitoring
- Weather forecasting
NavIC is a valuable tool for India and its neighbours. It provides an independent and accurate navigation system that can be used for a variety of applications.
