Opposition parties in Maharashtra on Saturday demanded the arrest of Maharashtra Forest Minister Sudhir Mungantiwar, who has been under pressure for allegedly ordering the killing of tigress Avni on November 3. The Congress, Shiv Sena and Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) demanded his dismissal or, they said, protests would be held across the State. The parties called the probe panel set-up by the government on Friday “a sham” to protect the Minister, and demanded a CBI probe. Meanwhile, a global march in support of tigress Avni was cancelled after the Mumbai Police denied permission to the organisers. There will now be a silent protest in Shivaji Park. The march, which was to have been taken out in several cities across the globe, was scheduled to begin in Mumbai from the Common Man statue at the Worli Sea Face and end at Shivaji Park in Dadar. However, the Worli police denied permission. Gurpreet Singh Chawla, one of the organisers, said, “We have been asked to conduct a protest at Shivaji Park. No reasons were given for denial of permission.” Senior Police Inspector Sukhlal Varpe, Worli police station, said permission was denied in keeping with Bombay High Court directives. “We do not allow any march from Worli sea face due to reasons of law and order issues and also because it would give rise to traffic problems. The HC, too, has forbidden marches from or to the Bandra Worli Sea Link,” Mr. Varpe said. The silent protest at Nana Nani Park will begin at 4 p.m. on Sunday. Several filmmakers, actors, activists, and politicians are expected to participate in the protest.
