Context:
The Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) is preparing to launch the Block-2 BlueBird communications satellite onboard LVM3, following the successful launch of the NISAR satellite.
About BlueBird Satellite:
- Developer:
- Designed by AST SpaceMobile, a US-based aerospace company.
- Version:
- Block-2 is the upgraded version of the BlueBird series.
- Earlier, Block-1 satellites were launched in 2024 aboard a SpaceX Falcon 9 rocket.
- Launch Vehicle & Site:
- Will be launched using LVM3 (formerly GSLV Mk III), ISRO’s heaviest medium-lift launch vehicle, capable of geostationary and human spaceflight missions.
- Launch site: Satish Dhawan Space Centre, Sriharikota.
Specifications:
- Weight: Approximately 6,500 kg
- Antenna Size: 64 m², designed for Low Earth Orbit (LEO) deployment
- Bandwidth: Operates with 40 MHz capacity
- Data Speed: Offers up to 120 Mbps peak transmission
- Usage:
- Facilitates space-based broadband access and direct smartphone voice calls.
ISRO’s Upcoming Missions:
- Uncrewed Missions:
- The first of three uncrewed test missions is scheduled for December 2025.
- Gaganyaan Mission:
- India’s first human spaceflight programme.
- Human-rated LVM3 has been successfully tested.
- The orbital module is in its advanced development stage.
- Indian Space Station:
- Planned for commissioning in 2028, with full completion targeted by 2035.
