A rise in Candida tropicalis infections has been linked to the use of tebuconazole, an azole-based fungicide commonly applied in farming and gardening.
About the Fungus:
-
- A yeast species from the Candida genus.
- Endemic to India but found globally.
- Highly pathogenic, especially in immunocompromised individuals (e.g., cancer patients, diabetics).
- Mortality rate: 55–60%.
Habitats:
-
- Marine environments (seawater, sediments, mangroves).
- Soil, fruits, human gut, and other food surfaces.
Health Impact:
-
- Particularly dangerous for neutropenic patients (low neutrophils).
- Often triggered by antibiotic use or high sugar levels.
- Commonly spreads via nosocomial (hospital-acquired) transmission between healthcare workers and patients.
