Context
The Department of Telecommunications (DoT) has launched a new feature on the Saral Sanchar portal to gather data on the demand for Captive Non-Public Network (CNPN) frequency bands.
About Saral Sanchar
- A digital platform developed by the DoT to facilitate transparent and online processing of telecom licenses and registrations.
What is a CNPN?
- A Captive Non-Public Network refers to a private 4G or 5G network set up by an enterprise solely for its internal communication and operational needs.
DoT Guidelines on CNPNs (2022)
- Authorization:
Enterprises with a net worth of ₹100 crore or more, or their authorized system integrators, are eligible to apply. - Spectrum Access:
Firms can obtain spectrum through:- Leasing from telecom service providers, or
- Direct allocation from the DoT.
- Revision and Upgradation:
To meet growing demand and ensure compatibility with modern devices, the DoT transitioned CNPNs to International Mobile Telecommunications (IMT) bands.
About IMT Bands
- IMT bands are internationally recognized frequency ranges assigned for high-speed mobile networks (4G/5G).
- They are:
- Globally harmonized and endorsed by the International Telecommunication Union (ITU), Geneva.
- Licensed, exclusive, and interference-free, managed and allocated directly by the government for optimal usage.
