Fishermen set sail as Gaja crosses the coast

After staying off work for a week in view of ‘Gaja’ cyclonic threat, Rameswaram fishermen ventured into the sea for fishing on Saturday after the cyclone crossed the coast in the early hours of Friday. The fishermen, who escaped unscathed when the cyclone wreaked havoc in other parts of the coastal districts damaging fishing boats, set sail for fishing after the fishing department officials issued permits and provided diesel at subsidised rates. The department has issued fishing permits to 893 mechanised boats, which set sail from Rameswaram fishing jetty and Mandapam North Sea, officials said. The fishermen had last set sail for fishing on November 10, after which, the fisheries department had warned them against venturing into the sea till further orders in view of the cyclonic threat. The 600 odd mechanised boats in Mandapam south would be allowed to go for fishing on Sunday, depending upon the weather condition, Deputy Director of Fisheries E. Kathavarayan said. A large number of country boat fishermen had also set sail for fishing on Saturday, he said. Meanwhile, about 500 mechanised fishing boats, which were moved out from Mandapam north and anchored in the Gulf of Mannar region in the south for safety, moved back to Mandapam north, passing through the Pamban channel after the railway authorities opened the Scherzer’s span in the bridge for three hours this afternoon. The railway authorities had initially expressed inability to open the span, citing fault but Mr. Kathavarayan took up the matter with the higher authorities and brought experts to rectify the fault and ensured that the span was opened for the mechanised boats to pass through.
