Flash Ironmaking Technology

Prelims Bits

Context:

China has introduced an innovative ironmaking technique known as ‘flash ironmaking’, which is expected to bring major transformation to global steel production.

What is Flash Ironmaking?

The process involves injecting finely powdered iron ore into a furnace operating at extremely high temperatures. This triggers a rapid and powerful chemical reaction.

Advantages and Relevance:
  • Rapid Processing: The entire ironmaking process is completed in just 3 to 6 seconds, compared to the 5–6 hours taken by conventional blast furnace methods—a remarkable 3,600-fold increase in speed.
  • Efficient for Lower-Grade Ores: It is particularly effective for low- and medium-grade iron ores, which are widely available in China.
  • Environmental Impact: By eliminating coal usage, this method has the potential to enable the steel sector to achieve near-zero carbon emissions, supporting global decarbonisation goals.
