Gallantry Awards

Context: President Droupadi Murmu has approved the conferment of four Kirti Chakras and 18 Shaurya Chakras to personnel from the armed forces and Central Armed Police Forces as part of the 103 gallantry awards.

Kirti Chakra Awardees

  • Major Malla Rama Gopal Naidu (Maratha Light Infantry, 56 Rashtriya Rifles)
  • Colonel Manpreet Singh (posthumous) (Sikh Light Infantry, 19 Rashtriya Rifles)
  • Ravi Kumar (J&K Light Infantry, 63 Rashtriya Rifles)
  • Humayun Muzammil Bhat, DySP, J&K Police, 19 Rashtriya Rifles

Kirti Chakra (“Wheel of Glory”)

  • The Kirti Chakra is an Indian military decoration awarded for acts of valor, courageous action, or self-sacrifice performed away from the battlefield. It can also be awarded to civilians.
  • This award is the peacetime equivalent of the Maha Vir Chakra and ranks second in the order of precedence among peacetime gallantry awards, following the Ashoka Chakra and preceding the Shaurya Chakra.

Shaurya Chakra (“Wheel of Gallantry”)

  • The Shaurya Chakra is typically awarded for counter-insurgency operations and actions against the enemy during peacetime. It can also be awarded posthumously and may be given to civilians.
  • It serves as the peacetime equivalent of the Vir Chakra and ranks third in the order of precedence among peacetime gallantry awards, after the Ashoka Chakra and Kirti Chakra, and before the Yudh Seva Medal.
