Context

President Droupadi Murmu was honored with the Grand Collar of the Order of Timor-Leste.

  • The award recognizes her contributions to public service and her commitment to education, social welfare, and the empowerment of women.
  • During her historic visit as the first Indian Head of State to Timor-Leste, she emphasized India’s role as a proponent of global peace and shared prosperity, in line with the philosophy of Vasudhaiva Kutumbakam.

About Timor-Leste

  • Location: Timor-Leste, also known as East Timor, is an island nation located in the eastern part of the Lesser Sunda Islands at the southernmost point of the Malay Archipelago.
  • Geographical Boundaries: It is bordered by the Timor Sea to the southeast, the Wetar Strait to the north, the Ombai Strait to the northwest, western Timor (part of Indonesia) to the southwest, and Australia to the south.
  • Unique Positioning: It is the only Asian country entirely situated in the Southern Hemisphere.
